Brazilian Political Leader. Goulart was a reformer who served as President of Brazil from 1961 to his ouster in 1964. He served in various posts during the administration of Getulio Vargas (1930-1945, 1951-1954), who was his mentor. Goulart served as vice president under Juscelino Kubitschek from 1956 to 1961. He was again elected vice president in 1960, but he took over the presidency in 1961 after the resignation of Janio Quadros. Goulart was opposed by the military because of the belief that he had communist sympathies. He made the United States angry by both his strengthening ties with other communist countries and his radical reforms. Goulart won passage of several reforms which would help the working class, but the economy was hit with severe inflation. This, along with the mistrust from both the far left and the military, led to a military coup in 1964. Goulart ended up in exile at his ranch in northern Argentina. His passing in 1976 have led to rumors in regards to the cause of his death.
