Roman Catholic Saint. She was the daughter of the early Anglo-Saxon king Merewald of Magnoset and was educated in France at the abbey at Chelles. While there, the abbess tried to persuade her to marry a young nobleman, but she refused. After threats and violence failed, the abbess was said to have locked her inside a blazing oven, but when it was opened after three hours Mildred was miraculously unharmed. After this event she was venerated as a saint, but the abbess' continued abuse forced her to flee to England. When she landed at Ebbsfleet, Kent, she discovered a stone to step safely ashore upon, this was later taken to the abbey of Minster-in-Thanet as a relic and was said to have the power to cure disease. She then became a nun at Minster-in-Thanet and was made abbess upon the death of St Ermenburga. Mildred died at the abbey in AD 732 after a long illness, and in 1033 her remains were transferred to a shrine in St Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury. Her saint's day is July 14th and she is said to protect against damage by geese.
