New Jersey Governor, U.S. Congressman. Born in Succasunna, New Jersey, his brother was New Jersey Governor Mahlon Dickerson. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, in 1808, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1813 and commenced to practice law in Paterson, New Jersey. He was New Jersey counselor in 1817 and a member of the New Jersey State General Assembly, (1821-22). In 1833, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth Congresses, serving until 1836, when he resigned to accept an appointment from the legislature to be the 18th New Jersey Governor. He served as Governor, (1836-37) and was again elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-sixth Congress, serving (1839-41). After his term he was appointed judge of the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey and served until his death at age 74 in Paterson, New Jersey.
