A two-car accident Friday, has claimed the lives of two Vinton residents - Mrs. Karl Roberts and James Carlson have died from injuries suffered when a car they were riding in was struck broadside by a car driven by Leroy Stewart of Newhall. The accident happened at 4:25 p.m seven miles north of Vinton at the junction of highway 101 and the Brandon blacktop.
According to the highway patrol, Stewart allegedly drove his car through a stop sign at the corner while traveling south. The other car in the accident, driven by Richard H. Meyer of Vinton, was heading west Meyer was carrying seven Vinton passengers coming home from work in Cedar Rapids.
Mrs. Roberts was dead at the scene, according to the highway patrol. Carlson died Sunday afternoon, Sept. 12, 1971, at University Hospitals in Iowa City.
Other passengers in the Meyer car included Mrs. James (Carma) Noeller, 25, in fair condition under intensive care at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Mrs Dick (Judith AnnJHowe, 24, and Mrs. Keith (Joanne) Abernathy, 36, both in fair condition under intensive care at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Ed (Opal) Keffer, 44 in fairly good condition at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton Mrs. Rudy (Jan) Dake, 24, has been dismissed from Virginia Gay.
Stewart was listed in fairly good condition at Virginia Gay and Meyer was treated and released from the Vinton hospital following the accident
James Carlson was born at Watkins on Feb. 2, 1937, a son of Merle and Philomena Becker Carlson and married Ann Marie Fuchs on Nov 18, 1961 at Vinton. He was employed at Collins Radio Co. in Cedar Rapids and was financial secretary of the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his widow, one son, Thomas James, and one daughter, Caren Colleen, at home; his parents; five sisters, Mrs. Martin Plotz of Amana, Mrs. Allen Serovy of Solon, Mrs. Walter Plotz of Swisher, Mrs Roger Williams of Marion and Mrs. John Berry of Vinton; and one brother, Robert, of Marion.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
