US Senator, Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He was elected as a Senator from New Jersey to the United States Senate, serving first from 1867 to 1869, then from 1871 to 1877. His tenure in the Senate was marked by his vote to remove President Andrew Johnson during his impeachment trial. He was appointed as Secretary of State during the Administration of President Chester A. Arthur, serving from 1881 to 1885.
