In 1915, Capra rented a 20-acre ranch in Sierra Madre, Calif., where he grew citrus and avocado trees. On Nov. 18, 1916, the 64-year-old Capra went to check on some mechanical equipment in the pump house on the property. The long overcoat he was wearing got caught in the gears of the pump and Capra was pulled between the gears, which cut his body in half at the waist.
