Nancy used to tell her daughter (my grandmother Melvina) about the Union soldiers and the Home Guards---of both sides---during the Civil War searching the hills for the men, who would hide in the caves and rocks atop the mountains, many times taking the milk cow with them to hide from the marauding army.
