Civil War Union Brigadier General. A prominent New Jersey political figure, he facilitated the raising and equipping of four regiments of New Jersey militia immediately after President Abraham Lincoln called for troops to defend Washington, DC after the bombardment of Fort Sumter in April 1861. He was commissioned a Union Brigadier General for 3 months, and commanded the reserve division of New Jersey Volunteer and Militia troops at the Battle of First Bull Run (July 1861). Although the division took no active part in the action, its presence influenced the Confederate commanders to break off the battle when the Union forces were in retreat. He later served as Mayor of Newark, New Jersey (1864 to 1866), and as United States Ambassador to Germany (1893 until his death in 1896).
