He was one of 49 (24 Sailors and 25 Marines) killed as a result of their liberty boat being rammed by a freighter in Barcelona, Spain on January 17, 1977.

25 were from the USS Guam (11 sailors and 14 marines and the other 24 were from the USS Trenton (13 sailors and 11 marines).

There is now a stone memorial at the landing pier listing all 49.
