A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Gettysburg June 16, 1863, mustered into state service at Harrisburg June 20 as a private with Co. A, 26th Pennsylvania Militia, a unit comprised primarily of Pennsylvania College students. He was immediately detailed as a clerk in Brig. Gen. James Addams Beaver's headquarters at Camp Curtin and honorably discharged with his company July 30, 1863.
He married Anna C. Murray April 27, 1869, and fathered Luther Murray (b. 07/24/70), William Hiram (b. 05/06/75), Stewart Test (b. 11/10/79, d. 02/26/80), Preston Kramer (b. 04/09/81, d. 08/02/81), and Harold Loring (b. 01/11/84). Ordained as a Lutheran minister in 1867, his last church was in Washington DC. Anna died in 1915, and he married the much younger Lillian M. Evans, née Holt, February 6, 1918, fathering Charles A. (b. 1919, d. 01/24/20). An ardent prohibitionist, he died at his Washington DC home.
