Brigadier General, ERNEST GRAVES was born on 27 March 1880 in Orange County, North Carolina to Ralph Henry Graves, Jr and Julia Charlotte Hooper-Graves.

Ernest Graves earned his Bachelors of Arts degree in 1901 at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Ernest played fullback in football from 1898-1901. Graves was also accredited as one of the best catchers in the history of baseball at UNC Chapel Hill, 1898 to 1900. During Ernest's Freshman year Commencement of 1897, he earned Freshman Class Honors.

Ernest earned his graduate degree through the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, graduating second in his class in 1905.

He served as the head football coach for the the Army Black Knights at the United States Military Academy at West Point from 1906 and 1912.

He served with the 3rd Engineers at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and subsequently served in the Philippines from 1909 to 1910. He later served in Mexico with General John J. Pershing, commanding the engineering company that built roads to allow supplies for the Army. He also served with Pershing in France during World War I. During World War I, he was placed in charge of the Intermediate Section and was responsible for building warehouses used to supply the Army in France. He was retired from the Army in 1921 due to deafness with the rank of brigadier general.

Ernest married Lucy Gunn Bernie-Graves circa 1923 in New York, and they had ONE son of record:

Ernest Graves, Jr (1924 - ?).

Ernest passed away on 9 June 1953 at at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, District of Columbia, and he was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia.
