MOS: 6242 Aircraft Electrical Technician.
After arriving in Vietnam Robert was assigned to H&MS-16, MAG-16, 1st Marine Air Wing.
Little is known about the early years of Robert other than he was born in Conneaut before the
family moved to Naples, where he grew up with a younger sister named Rebecca and a brother named Eric. His neighborhood friends remember him as an active boy, playing ball and doing activities in the neighborhood. He had bright red hair and big blue eyes. In the late 1950's the family relocated to Naples, Florida.
His sister recalls waving goodbye to him as he boarded the train to head west for his journey to Vietnam. He wanted to go by train so he could see some of the country.
A Marine friend recalls them being stationed at USMC Marble Mountain Air Facility just outside DaNang. He remembers him as a tall gangly freckled red head that always wore a smile. All of us lived in the same area, we shared a 10 man "hootch". On 28 August 1967 he recalls several big explosions and was thrown off his bunk in a rocket attack. When he looked at the other end where "Bob" bunked and the entire hootch was in the crater. He never knew what hit him. Four other Marines died in the attack and many more were wounded.
Survived by his wife, Sandra L Steele and his parents, Robert E and Jeanne L Steele and his sister, Rebecca Steele all of Naples, Florida and brother, PFC Eric D Steele serving with the US Marines in New Jersey.
