"Arthur Rice Dies in Africa. Arthur Rice, 53, a Homestake veteran, died Thursday at 2 a.m. in a hospital in Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa. He suffered a heart attack about a week ago.
Rice was born April 18, 1908, in Butte, Mont. He was a graduate of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Rapid City, with a degree in mining engineering. Ethel Sehn, Spearfish and Rice were married in 1934 in Deadwood. He began work for the Homestake Mining Company in the metallurgical department on Jan. 25, 1934 and was transferred to the mine on Sept. 21, 1937.
He held the rank of captain for his service with the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific theater. On July 6, 1955, he terminated his employment with Homestake and accepted a position with the Atomic Energy Commission in Grand Junction, Colo. He worked for the AEC in South Africa.
Besides his widow, Rice is survived by a daughter, Barbara, 12; his mother, Aberdeen, and several brothers. He was a member of all Masonic bodies.
Cremation was held Friday afternoon in Johannesburg. The ashes will be interred in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
His wife and daughter expect to arrive in New York, N.Y. on April 7. They plan to return to their home in Grand Junction. Mrs. Rice is a sister of Mrs. E.E. Stonefelt, Lead."

"Memorial Established For Former Lead Man. Mrs. Arthur Rice has established a memorial for diabetics in memory of her husband, Arthur Rice, former Lead resident, who died March 30 in Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa. His ashes will be interred in Arlington National Cemetery Tuesday at 10 a.m., according to a phone call received late Saturday evening by Mrs. E.E. Stonefelt, Lead, sister of Mrs. Rice. Mrs. Rice and her daughter, Barbara Rice, had just arrived in Washington, D.C.
Mail for Mrs. Rice may be sent in care of A.M. Mastrovich, 510 N. 18th St., Grand Junction, Colo. She and her daughter expect to arrive at their home there by the end of this week. Mr. and Mrs. Stonefelt and Mrs. Rice's and Mrs. Stonefelt's brother, Fred Sehn of Moorcroft, Wyo., will go to Grand Junction this weekend. After a month in Grand Junction, Mrs. Rice and her daughter plan to come to Lead."
