U.S. Senator. He moved with his parents to Ohio in 1821, taught school, studied medicine (1823-25), studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1828 and commenced to practice law in Jefferson, Ohio. He was prosecuting attorney of Ashtabula County (1835-37), a member Ohio State Senate (1837-38, 41-42) and judge of the third judicial court of Ohio (1847-51). In 1851, he was elected as a Whig to the U.S. Senate, serving until 1869. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he served as President pro tempore of the U.S. Senate, a government director of the Union Pacific Railroad and a member of the Santo Domingo Commission in 1871.
