Memorial service for Hazel M. Johnson, age 94, of Chickasha will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 31, 2007, in the Epworth United Methodist Church. Dr. Rockford Johnson and Rev. Don Horton will officiate. Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. in the Rose Hill Cemetery, prior to the memorial service. Everyone is invited to stay for a reception in Hazel's honor at the church following the memorial service.

Hazel was born the daughter of John C. Montgomery and Emma Benge Montgomery on March 20, 1913, in Sequoyah County, Oklahoma. She died on December 28, 2007, in Chickasha.

She married John W. Johnson on December 24, 1939, in Cushing, Oklahoma.

Hazel attended the Chilocco Indian Boarding School and Bacone Jr. College in Muskogee, then graduated from Northeastern State College (now NSU) at Tahlequah. Hazel taught at Kelley Indian Day School in northeastern Oklahoma and at Carter Seminary in Ardmore during World War II. Hazel later taught at Perry Public Schools. She moved to Chickasha in 1957 and taught at the Grand Avenue and Intermediate Schools. Hazel retired in 1978.

Hazel was a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church where she served on the administrative board and was a member of United Methodist Women and the Wedding Ring Class. Hazel was also the coordinator of the Emergency Food Pantry since 1984. Governor Brad Henry and Mayor Greg Elliott jointly declared October 21, 2007, "Hazel M. Johnson Day" in honor of her volunteer work.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, and her husband, John on September 9, 1973. Survivors include: Daughter: Jackie Jean Johnson Landler of Oklahoma City; Grandson: Jeffrey Scott Lindblad of Shoreview, Minnesota; Granddaughter: Jennifer Benge Lindblad of New York City, New York; Great-Grandson: Pierce Montgomery Lindblad of Cumberland, Wisconsin; Jennifer's Finance: Rory Keenan of New York City, New York; Sister: Okemah Arey of Tulsa; Sister: Syble Claymore of Gettisburg, South Dakota.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Epworth United Methodist Church Building Fund. Service will be under the direction of the McRay Funeral Home.
