John Franklin McCool was the son of James McCool and Margaret Calvert McCool. His sister, Mary McCool Ethridge is also buried in Rehoboth Church Cemetery.

John F McCool married Marry "Molly" Walker and had one biological child, a daughter, Leila McCool.

After John's wife, Mollie, died in 1902, John McCool adopted two boys, Ellis Davis McCool and Fletcher Fletcher Harter McCool.
