John Wells Hestand Died April 18, 1938, after about three weeks' critical illness two weeks of which time he was cared for by his daughters, Mrs. C. C. Benford of Tulsa, Okla., and Mrs. F. W. Wright of Topeka, Kans. Before their arrival, he had lived alone in Brownington since the death of his son, Henry H. Hestand, 18 years ago, and previous to that time, father and son had lived together.
He was born near California, Mo., April 16, 1852. Of his large family the following survive in addition to the above mentioned daughters; Mrs. R. H. West, Ranger, Tex., and sons, D. B. and L. C. Hestand of Topeka, Kans., Charles A., Chicago. He also leaves 25 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Hestand united with the First Presbyterian church at Carthage many years ago. He had lost his eyesight about 35 years ago, and possessed unusual energy, for the accomplished tasks almost unbelievable. He cared for his home and cooked his meals, when he did not go to a restaurant, and though sightless, walked
with great accuracy.
Funeral services were conducted at the home Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. by Rev. F. W. Wittenbraker, Baptist Minister. Burial at Maplewood cemetery beside his son in charge of the Rickett Funeral Service.
Pallbearers were John Moore, Bryan Park, Paul Waggoner, Phillip Metzler, Perce Bolinger and Gene Starbuck.
