Rachel was the only child of Corbin Lane and Elizabeth Pennington to be born in Tennessee.

Rachel married George Wesley Haley May 23, 1847, in Lawrence County, Missouri. In order to support his young bride and child, George soon began farming. After a few years of marriage, Rachel gave birth to three children while living in Missouri: John William in 1847, Nancy Elizabeth in Jan. 1850, and William Richard in Dec. 1850.

George and Rachel made the move to Texas with other family members, arriving in Texas in 1854, just in time to welcome their third son, Allen W., the first native Texan to join the family. George purchased 160 acres of land at Plum Creek, Coryell County, Texas in 1859, where they made their home and raised many of their children.
