Birth Name: Christiana Johanna "Caroline" Henriette Grüschow
She was born in Moltzow (Rambow parish), Mecklenburg-Schwerin (Germany).
Immigrated with her parents Friedrich & Marie Büttner Grüschow (Grueschow/Gruschow), brothers & sisters and their families to New York City on Aug. 28, 1854 aboard the Hamburg sailing ship "Humboldt". She was first married to William Voss of Daschow (Kuppentin), Mecklenburg-Schwerin but who died in New York City on May 03, 1862. She later married again in 1863 to Ernst Evasio Heinrich Buttner. She had children with both husbands.
Wm. Voss & Caroline ran a seamans boarding house (3 Carlisle Pl.) on the lower west side of Manhattan. She later ran it with her second husband Ernst Buttner. They moved to Brooklyn, New York in 1866.
