Arlene Vivian Whitcomb of the Mark H. Wentworth Home of Portsmouth, NH passed away on April 24, 2004, with her family by her side. Born on January 12, 1914 in West Roxbury, MA, she was the daughter of Harry L. and Laura M. (Heron) Paul.

She graduated from Manchester Central High School in 1932 and was recognized by her classmates for her “spirit, energy and many friendships.”

Working for the telephone company, she transferred to Claremont where she met Herbert P. Whitcomb Jr. They were married in 1936, and she remained there until 1992.
She was a member and deaconess of the First Congregational Church, the Women’s Club and the Claremont Country Club.

She was steadfast and devoted in her caring for others, and she cherished time spent with her husband, children, grandchildren and friends. Fond memories include the many social gatherings at the house, family picnics at Moody Park and the wonderful entertainment at the Roseland Ballroom in West Claremont, where her husband and friends played in the locally famous Yacht Club Orchestra of the 1930s and 1940s.

Those who loved her include her children, Joan and Tom Rouillard of Nantucket, MA, and Paul and Jean Whitcomb of North Hampton, NH; her grandchildren, Kent Rouillard and Rachel Miller of Cambridge, MA, Wendy and Ilya Kagan of Nantucket, Todd and Ada Morales-Whitcomb of Portsmouth; one great-granddaughter, Annely Kagan of Nantucket; and a sister, Madelyn Neuman of Concord, NH.

She was predeceased by her husband, who died in 1990; and a beloved granddaughter, Samantha Whitcomb.

Interment will be in West Claremont Burial Grounds in Union Cemetery.
