Son of Thos. Starr, Sr. Married Myra Maybelle Shirley, June 1880, who became the notorious "Belle" Starr.
She was born in 1848, died in 1889.

Sam Starr was killed in a gunfight with Bureau of Indian Affairs Police Officer Frank West. Officer West had previous contacts with Starr and during an earlier arrest attempt, West shot Starr's horse (some accounts say the horse belonged to Belle Starr). The two men encountered each other at a dance near the Canadian River. Officer West was outside warming himself by the fire when Starr walked over and fired without warning. West was hit in the neck but was able to return fire, killing Starr. Officer West also died of his wounds. Officer West is memorialized at Panel 29-E: 18 on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC.
