He died in Puerto Rico. He was there during the time the Spanish-American War was being fought in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Louis died at the US Army Hospital in Ponce, Puerto Rico from typhoid fever. (per "U.S. Returns from Regular Army Infantry Regiments, 1821-1916") [This confirmation of death reported by Marc Althouse June 2015 -- Thanks]

Pontiac, Nov. 15, The remains of Private Louis N. Buttolph and Morris Pragar arrived yesterday from Puerto Rico in care of an undertaker. Short services were held over the bodies and then they were interred. The expense of bringing the bodies from Puerto Rico was borne by the government."
