Matilda Elizabeth Hess, daughter of Jonas and Elizabeth Hess, was born near St. Patrick, Missouri, August 8, 1866, and departed this life September 20, 1923, at the age of 57 years, one month and 12 days. Her entire life was spent on the farm near St. Patrick, where she was well-known and loved by her many acquaintances. She was one of a family of nine children. She was preceded in death by her father and mother and three sisters—Mary, Sophia and Caroline—and one brother, Jonas. She is survived by one brother, Philip Hess, of Lewistown, Missouri, and three sisters—Kate Hess, Amelia Bick, and Julia Baker—all of near St. Patrick. There are also seven nieces, two nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends who mourn her departure.


Funeral services were held at the home Saturday, September 22, 1923, at 10 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. H. E. Corbin, pastor of the McKendree Methodist Church of this city. Interment was in Forest Grove cemetery. Early in life, under 10 years of age, she united with the Winchester M. E. Church, South.
