Carl O. Songer, 93, of Seneca, died May 10, 1998, shortly after arrival at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca. He had an apparent heart attack.

He was born April 11, 1905, the son of Will E. and Ruth Effie Stevens Songer at Bloomfield, Iowa. He he was a year old, the family moved to Pueblo, Colorado and later to Simla, Colorado, where he graduated high school in 1922. He attended Colorado State College at Ft. Collins, Colorado for two years.

He worked as a gasoline engine mechanic in the oil fields in Oklahoma for two years. In 1926, he was employed in Denver, Colorado, as an artist in Electrical Products Consolidated, a pioneer in the neon sign business. Some businesses are still using the neon signs Carl designed many years ago. He lived in Seattle and Portland before moving to Chicago in 1950 where he was superintendent for General Outdoor Advertising.

In late 1951, he moved to Lincoln, NE, where he was superintendent for Nebraska Neon Co. for eight years. In 1961, he and his wife, purchased the Seneca Florist Shop and moved to Seneca. They had a large greenhouse, spring bedding plants and grew many of their own flowers. In 1991, they sold the green house. Carl enjoyed the greenhouse and continued to work there until February, 1996, when he fell and fractured an elbow.

He was married to Mary Helfy in Colorado in 1923. They were later divorced. On February 14, 1947, he married Marjorie Anderson in Seattle. She survives at the home in Seneca.

He was a member of the Seneca Masonic Lodge No. 39 AF & AM, the Seneca Lion's Club, the Seneca Chamber of Commerce, the Sesostris Shrine in Lincoln, NE, the Kansas Florist Association, and the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He attended the United Methodist Church in Seneca. He painted for a hobby and his artistic talent in colors was obvious there as well as in his flowers. He enjoyed traveling and liked getting out with people and had a lot of fun at the morning coffee gathering at Harsh's Drug Store.
