Elizabeth J. Stuart Brown, daughter of Hon. John T. and Mary Nash Stuart. First wife of Christopher Columbus Brown; married 10/20/1859. Died of dysentary at the age of 30. The Bettie Stuart Institute, a noted school for young women, was founded in 1868 on a site donated by the late Christopher C. Brown in honor of his wife. The Bettie Stuart Institute occupied this site from 1868 to 1921.

Died, in this city, on Tuesday, March 2d, at three o'clock, p.m., of dysentery, Bettie Stuart, wife of Christopher C. Brown, after an illness of twelve days. She retained her consciousness to the last, gave directions for her burial, dictated messages to all her relatives and friends, and passed away without a struggle. She sleeps in Jesus. Her funeral will take place from the First Presbyterian Church to-day, Wednesday, at half-past two p.m. The body will not be exposed to view at church; but the friends who desire to take a look at the remains, are invited to call during the forenoon of to-day at the residence of her husband.
