Harriet, "Hattie" was born to James and Nancy (Owen) Holyfield in Alabama in 1824. The 1830 Census has the family living in Shelby County, Alabama. The 1840 Census shows the family in or near Point Remove, Conway County, Arkansas. Her father, James Holyfield was a farmer.

Harriet Holyfield's first husband was Andrew Rogers. She had two children by him: Mary A. Rogers (1844-1853), and James Rogers (1847-1906). She must have been widowed before 1850 as she and her two children are stated with the last name of Holyfield in the 1850 Census living with her parents.

In March of 1852, Hattie married John Guess in Conway County, Arkansas. On April 7, 1852, John, Hattie and her two children Mary and James left for California. According to John Guess' bio: "...making the trip across the plains with two yoke of oxen, one wagon and all-necessary equipment and provisions of nine months...." They arrived in El Monte Township, Los Angeles County, California in October or November 1852.

1853 brought joy and sadness. Henry Guess, the eldest son of Harriet Holyfield & John Guess, was born on January 14th. It has been said, Henry was the first Anglo child to be born in the southern portion of California. Mary A. Rogers died July 22, age nine.

It appears Hattie and the children lived on a farm near El Monte Township, while husband John was buying and leasing land all over southern California to raise cattle. They had five more children after Henry, four girls and one more boy.

Harriet died 1897, in El Monte Township, about age 72.
