In 1850, 8-year-old T.J. was living with his parents, four brothers, Francis M., Hiram, Alonzo, and Theodore, and two sisters, Mary and Eliza, in Jackson township of Elkhart county.

By the time the 1860 census was taken, Thomas' mother had died and the children were separated, living in many different households sprinkled throughout the county.

On November 27th, 1867, Thomas, a Milford blacksmith, married Miss Elizabeth Woods in Cass county, Michigan.
