By his first marriage to Ama Mazuzan, he had a son, Fenimore, who was Governor of Wyoming from 1903 to 1905.

Rev. Chatterton was graduated in 1854 from Middleberry College in Vermont with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Then in 1957 he earned his Master of Arts degree, presumably from the same college. In 1866 he was graduated from Auburn Theological Seminary. Then, in 1866, he was ordained to Presbyterian ministry by the Presbytery of Dubuque (Iowa). He was pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Janesville, Iowa (1866-1867). Then at Ackley, Iowa (1868-1869). He served as the presbytery missionary (1868-1871). Then he pastored the Presbyterian congregation at Northwood, Iowa (1873-1875), after which he served the church in Charles City, Iowa (1876). In 1877 he moved to New York. In 1906 he was living in Greenville, New York.
