John is my son's 2nd paternal Gr-Grandfather.

The first of eight children born to William & Annie Lyon (Park) Dougall of Glasgow, Scotland, late of Los Angeles Co CA, John married:

1) Erie Edith Dungey in 1894 in Los Angeles Co CA, the daughter of John Wesley & Hannah (Scogin) Dungey of MO; they divorced 30 Apr 1913 in Los Angeles Co CA.
2) Helen Gertrude Bennett, 1914 in Los Angeles Co CA; she died 18 Aug 1935 in Los Angeles Co CA.
3) Cecile Elvira Selinger abt 1935 in Los Angeles Co CA, the daughter of John Franklin & Margaret (Spillman) Selinger.

Children with Erie:
1) Carl Arthur Dougall (1895-1943), m: Jessie Chorum.

No children with Helen.

Children with Cecile:
1) John Park Dougall Jr
2) Marsha Jeanne Dougall (1942-1967)

John's granddaughter, Alice Lorraine Dougall, may never have known her Grandfather. If she did, she never told anyone who passed on that information. I remember she told me he was born in Scotland. There appears to have been no contact between John and his adult son Carl, Lorraine's father. For whatever the reason, it is now lost to time. It is still a mystery why his son Carl was living with his maternal grandparents in 1900, but it is now certain Carl is John's son. The 1910 Census states John and Erie had been married 16 yrs, making their marriage year 1894.

In 1875, John's father immigrated with his family from Glasgow, Scotland to Invercargill, New Zealand. By 1890 John had come to California and resided in Los Angles Co by 1891. In 1895 John becomes a naturalized US Citizen.

1900 Census-San Jose Twp, Pomona, Los Angeles Co CA; John is an Officer, possibly in the Naval Reserves since he lived for a time on base on the docked submarine USS Alert.

In May 1904 John graduates from California Medical College and by 1907 is a Professor of Bacteriology at the Pacific College of Medicine and Osteopathy.

Short History of Submarine Tender, 1910-1922 - USS Alert -
"Although returned to the Navy on 27 Feb 1910, the USS Alert was not reactivated until almost two years later. On 25 Jan 1912, she was placed in commission, in reserve (with Lt. Charles E. Smith in command) in connection with her fitting out for service as a submarine tender. She was placed in full commission on 1 Jul 1912, with Lt. Charles E. Smith still in command.

"The USS Alert tended submarines for the Torpedo Flotilla, Pacific Fleet, until late in 1917. In executing her new duties, she made short voyages along the California coast in much the same manner as she had done while serving as an apprentice training vessel."
