Sarah Martha Crippen was born near Knoxville, Tennessee in 1816. In 1842, she married Levi Dennis and to this union was born two sons, John and Edward Dennis. In 1846, Levi moved his family to Sullivan County MO. Shortly after they arrived, Levi contracted pneumonia and died.

The widowed Sarah was married in May 1847 to widower Samuel Bingham who was also the father of 10 children by his first wife, Anna Hoover. She had died in 1846. Samuel and Sarah had five more children over the next few years; Jesse, Matt and Tom and two daughters, Eliza Ellen and Barbara Ellen. Samuel moved his family along with his step-son, John and his wife, Julia Spurlock Dennis to Utah and Colorado and finally to homestead in LaPorte, Colorado about 1864. The family lived here for several years. Samuel died in 1883 and the body was returned to Missouri for burial beside his first wife, Anna Hoover Bingham. Sarah followed her family to South Dakota and lived there until her death in 1891 in Hot Springs, Fall River County, South Dakota where she is buried.
