Adam and Thomas Sharp left Scotland for America in July 1849 . Upon their arrival, Adam went to work in the coal mines to earn enough to send for his parents and family in 1850 . The company they joined to cross the plains was formed at Council Bluffs . Their first camp was at the original Winter Quarters camp, which had been vacated after two years. Very little was left. Upon their arrival in the Valley, they camped at Red Butte . The next day Adam went to work helping quarry stone for the temple corner stone. Their first home was a dugout at Red Butte . His wife Elizabeth gave birth to twins there in a wagon box. A neighbor, who was a nurse, attended her. Those who worked at Red Butte made homes for their families in the area while they were working there. In 1856 , they ran out of work and had to leave.
