John was the son of William & 2nd wife Martha Standley Griffitts. On 20 February 1899, he married Etha Elizabeth Stroud.

They were the parents of 12 children-Wilmetta Lucille, Hattie Jane (Ryan), Georgia Missouri Mae (died young), Florence Gertrude (Sheffer), Opal (Reid), Otha (Hayes), Flossie Leigh (Hyatt), Caroline Elizabeth, John Thomas, Jr., Etha Marie, Martha Jewell (Hawk), and Dorothy Louise (Vaughn).
