He was born on April 9, 1931 in Manitowoc, son of the late John and Anna (Holschbach) Hartman. Leo graduated from St. Andrew Catholic School in 1945.
He married the former Marion Sullivan on June 7, 1958 at St. Isidore Catholic Church, Osman. The couple celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in June 2008. Leo was employed at Newton Implement for 18 years and was a self employed farmer for 39 years, retiring in 2000. Leo was a 50 year member of the Catholic Knights Branch #68 Osman and a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Newton.
Leo enjoyed playing sheepshead, gardening, telling stories and jokes and also had a hearty laugh which was infectious. He could fix anything, including old tractors and truly enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Marion Hartman, Newton; six sons and daughters-in-law, Leon and Diane Hartman, Newton, Allen and Sheri Hartman, Newton, Ronald Hartman and special friend, Rhonda, Sheboygan, John and Sharon Hartman, Kiel, Paul and Wendy Hartman, Hortonville, Andrew and Sandy Hartman, Green Bay; a daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Tim Bruckner, Fond du Lac; 16 grandchildren, Adam, Nathan, Jason, Jamie, Gregory, Cory, Stacy, Matthew, Erin, Jessica, Chandler, Jacob Hartman, Ryan, Maggie and Luke Bruckner, Sarah (Jason) Perl; three great-grandchildren, Taylor, Logan and Carter Perl; one brother and sisters-in-law, Norbert and Betty Hartman, Woodbridge, Virginia, Hermenia "Hermie" Hartman and Lillian Hartman, both of Manitowoc; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Margaret and James Casper, Muskego, and Dennis Christus, Sheboygan. Many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.
He was also preceded in death by five brothers, Alois, Anthony, Clarence "Jiggs", John and Francis; an infant sister, Helen; and sisters-in-law, Grace, Ruth, Pearl Hartman and MarJean Christus.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Community, Newton.
Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Lee Kahrs with entombment at Knollwood Mausoleum, Town of Kossuth.
