Frieda Emilie Therese SOMMERS, geb. WITTKOWSKE, wurde am 21. August 1878 in Exin, Kreis Schubin, Provinz Posen, Deutschland [heute Kcynia, Polen] als Tochter des Klempners Rudolf WITTKOWSKE und seiner Ehefrau Auguste WITTKOWSKE, geb. ZIMMERMANN geboren.
Am 18. November 1901 (standesamtlich & kirchlich) wird sie mit dem 2 Jahre älteren Hugo Arthur Oskar WEBER in Exin getraut. Hugo WEBER ist Maurer und Zimmermeister. Die kirchliche Trauung erfolgte durch Pfarrer Philipp FUSS-HIPPEL in der evangeli-schen Kirche zu Exin.
Die Ehe verlief jedoch offenbar nicht sehr glücklich und bestärkte sie wohl in ihrem Entschluss, 1913 endgültig und ohne den Ehemann in die USA auszuwandern.
Eine erste Amerikareise ist bereits 1907 in den Hamburger und New Yorker Passagier-listen dokumentiert. An Bord des HAPAG Dampfschiffes "Graf Waldersee" verlässt sie am 8. Juni 1907 Hamburg und trifft nach knapp 14-tägiger Überfahrt am 21. Juni 1907 in New York ein. Ziel der Reise ist Westfield, MA und der Besuch ihres Onkels Hermann LANGE, ihrer Tante Bertha LANGE, geb. However, the marriage was apparently not very happy and probably encouraged her in her decision to finally emigrate to the USA in 1913 and without her husband.
A first voyage to the United States can already be found in the Hamburg and New York passenger lists of 1907. She left Cuxhaven near Hamburg on board the HAPAG steamship "Graf Waldersee" on Jun.8, 1907 and arrived in New York on Jun.21, 1907. Her destination was Westfield, MA, where she visited her uncle Hermann LANGE, her aunt Bertha (ZIMMERMANN) LANGE and their children. She most probably also visited the grave of her maternal grandmother Pauline (CAROW) ZIMMERMANN who had passed away 4½ years earlier in Westfield, MA, and was buried at "Oak Grove Cemetery" in nearby Springfield, MA.
Her emigration in 1913 is also documented in both the Hamburg and the New York passenger lists. She made the voyage on board the "S.S. Imperator", the biggest steamship of her times which had only started her trans-Atlantic service half a year earlier. Frieda left Germany at the age of 35 on Oct.22, 1913 and arrived in New York 7 days later on Oct.29, 1913.
Researching this voyage turned out to be rather tedious as her name and the place of her last residence had been transcribed incorrectly in the various lists. There had been a typo in her first name which said "Freida" instead of "Frieda" (although the spelling in the list was correct). The place of last residence was also wrong as the transcribers obviously couldn't decipher the handwritten entry of the town - the German "x" became "se". And so "Exin" (correctly written in the manifest) became the strange "Esein". Clear proof was her mother "A. Witkowski" (Auguste WITTKOWSKE/ WITTKOWSKI) which could be found in the column "next to kin in Germany".
Frieda WEBER stayed in New York the next couple of years. When she and her first husband separated, is still not known. Her second marriage took place in Manhattan on Jul.19, 1919. She married Frederick Edward SOMMERS who had been 12 years younger and was born in Dallas, Texas. Why she obviously made false statements for her marriage certificate also remains a mystery. So she says that she had been "single" and that it was her "1st marriage". She mentions "Bromberg, Posen, Germany" as her PoB (which was partly correct as Exin is located in "Kreis Schubin - Bromberg District"). And she states that her father's name was "Rudolf WEBER" instead of "Rudolf WITTKOWSKE". Only the name of her mother, who was still living at that time, is correct. The document is signed by "F. W. WEBER" (= Frieda WITTKOWSKE WEBER).
Frieda is listed as a housewife in the 1920 U.S. Federal Census and together with her second husband she made her home in the New York borough of The Bronx, where they lived as boarders at 1907 Davidson Avenue.
At the beginning of the 1920s, Fred and Frieda go to Jamestown, Chautauqua County, New York. Fred got a job as an electrician and works for Roth & Zillig Inc.. The company were distributors for "Phila Diamond Grid Battery." They had the official service and offered genuine car parts for Delco, Klaxon, Remy, Atwater, Kent, North East, Gray Davis, Connecticut, Briggs-Stratton, Eisemann, Bosch und Splitdorf. They had also specialized in complete automobile electric service and starting, lighting and ignition systems. Residence of Fred and Frieda in Jamestown was at No. 14 Barrows Street.
In 1923, the couple moved to California and the Greater Los Angeles area. They had their own home in Hollywood (5532½ Harold Way (just between Hollywood Blvd. to the north and Sunset Blvd. to the south).

At the age of 89, Frieda SOMMERS passed away on Dec.30, 1967 at the Royal Oaks Convalescent Hospital in Glendale, Los Angeles County, CA. Her remains were cremated by "Pierce Brothers Valhalla" on Jan.8, 1968 and buried in the Columbarium of the "Chapel of the Pines Crematory".
For many years there had been contacts between Frieda and her brother Otto and her sister-in-law Helene in Dresden, Germany [at that time German Democratic Republic], but after Otto's death in 1952 letters became fewer. That's why her DoD, PoD and place of burial have not been known for almost 30 years.

Frieda Emilie Therese SOMMERS, geb. WITTKOWSKE, wurde am 21. August 1878 in Exin, Kreis Schubin, Provinz Posen, Deutschland [heute Kcynia, Polen] als Tochter des Klempners Rudolf WITTKOWSKE und seiner Ehefrau Auguste WITTKOWSKE, geb. ZIMMERMANN geboren.
Am 18. November 1901 (standesamtlich & kirchlich) wird sie mit dem 2 Jahre älteren Hugo Arthur Oskar WEBER in Exin getraut. Hugo WEBER ist Maurer und Zimmermeister. Die kirchliche Trauung erfolgte durch Pfarrer Philipp FUSS-HIPPEL in der evangeli-schen Kirche zu Exin.
Die Ehe verlief jedoch offenbar nicht sehr glücklich und bestärkte sie wohl in ihrem Entschluss, 1913 endgültig und ohne den Ehemann in die USA auszuwandern.
Eine erste Amerikareise ist bereits 1907 in den Hamburger und New Yorker Passagier-listen dokumentiert. An Bord des HAPAG Dampfschiffes "Graf Waldersee" verlässt sie am 8. Juni 1907 Hamburg und trifft nach knapp 14-tägiger Überfahrt am 21. Juni 1907 in New York ein. Ziel der Reise ist Westfield, MA und der Besuch ihres Onkels Hermann LANGE, ihrer Tante Bertha LANGE, geb. On November 18, 1901 (civil and church wedding) she was married in Exin to Hugo Arthur Oskar WEBER, who was 2 years her senior. Hugo WEBER was a bricklayer and master carpenter. The church wedding was performed by Pastor Philipp FUSS-HIPPEL in the Lutheran church in Exin.
However, the marriage was apparently not very happy and probably encouraged her in her decision to finally emigrate to the USA in 1913 and without her husband.
A first voyage to the United States can already be found in the Hamburg and New York passenger lists of 1907. She left Cuxhaven near Hamburg on board the HAPAG steamship "Graf Waldersee" on Jun.8, 1907 and arrived in New York on Jun.21, 1907. Her destination was Westfield, MA, where she visited her uncle Hermann LANGE, her aunt Bertha (ZIMMERMANN) LANGE and their children. She most probably also visited the grave of her maternal grandmother Pauline (CAROW) ZIMMERMANN who had passed away 4½ years earlier in Westfield, MA, and was buried at "Oak Grove Cemetery" in nearby Springfield, MA.

There had been a typo in her first name which said "Freida" instead of "Frieda" (although the spelling in the list was correct). The place of last residence was also wrong as the transcribers obviously couldn't decipher the handwritten entry of the town - the German "x" became "se". And so "Exin" (correctly written in the manifest) became the strange "Esein". Clear proof was her mother "A. Witkowski" (Auguste WITTKOWSKE/ WITTKOWSKI) which could be found in the column "next to kin in Germany".
Frieda WEBER stayed in New York the next couple of years. When she and her first husband separated, is still not known. Her second marriage took place in Manhattan on Jul.19, 1919. She married Frederick Edward SOMMERS who had been 12 years younger and was born in Dallas, Texas. Why she obviously made false statements for her marriage certificate also remains a mystery. So she says that she had been "single" and that it was her "1st marriage". She mentions "Bromberg, Posen, Germany" as her PoB (which was partly correct as Exin is located in "Kreis Schubin - Bromberg District"). And she states that her father's name was "Rudolf WEBER" instead of "Rudolf WITTKOWSKE". Only the name of her mother, who was still living at that time, is correct. The document is signed by "F. W. WEBER" (= Frieda WITTKOWSKE WEBER).
Frieda is listed as a housewife in the 1920 U.S. Federal Census and together with her second husband she made her home in the New York borough of The Bronx, where they lived as boarders at 1907 Davidson Avenue.
At the beginning of the 1920s, Fred and Frieda go to Jamestown, Chautauqua County, New York. Fred got a job as an electrician and works for Roth & Zillig Inc.. The company were distributors for "Phila Diamond Grid Battery." They had the official service and offered genuine car parts for Delco, Klaxon, Remy, Atwater, Kent, North East, Gray Davis, Connecticut, Briggs-Stratton, Eisemann, Bosch und Splitdorf. She left Cuxhaven near Hamburg on board the HAPAG steamship "Graf Waldersee" on Jun.8, 1907 and arrived in New York on Jun.21, 1907. Her destination was Westfield, MA, where she visited her uncle Hermann LANGE, her aunt Bertha (ZIMMERMANN) LANGE and their children. She most probably also visited the grave of her maternal grandmother Pauline (CAROW) ZIMMERMANN who had passed away 4½ years earlier in Westfield, MA, and was buried at "Oak Grove Cemetery" in nearby Springfield, MA.
Her emigration in 1913 is also documented in both the Hamburg and the New York passenger lists. She made the voyage on board the "S.S. Imperator", the biggest steamship of her times which had only started her trans-Atlantic service half a year earlier. Frieda left Germany at the age of 35 on Oct.22, 1913 and arrived in New York 7 days later on Oct.29, 1913.
Researching this voyage turned out to be rather tedious as her name and the place of her last residence had been transcribed incorrectly in the various lists. There had been a typo in her first name which said "Freida" instead of "Frieda" (although the spelling in the list was correct). The place of last residence was also wrong as the transcribers obviously couldn't decipher the handwritten entry of the town - the German "x" became "se". And so "Exin" (correctly written in the manifest) became the strange "Esein". Clear proof was her mother "A. Witkowski" (Auguste WITTKOWSKE/ WITTKOWSKI) which could be found in the column "next to kin in Germany".
Frieda WEBER stayed in New York the next couple of years. When she and her first husband separated, is still not known. Her second marriage took place in Manhattan on Jul.19, 1919. She married Frederick Edward SOMMERS who had been 12 years younger and was born in Dallas, Texas. Why she obviously made false statements for her marriage certificate also remains a mystery. So she says that she had been "single" and that it was her "1st marriage". She mentions "Bromberg, Posen, Germany" as her PoB (which was partly correct as Exin is located in "Kreis Schubin - Bromberg District"). And she states that her father's name was "Rudolf WEBER" instead of "Rudolf WITTKOWSKE". Only the name of her mother, who was still living at that time, is correct. The document is signed by "F. W. WEBER" (= Frieda WITTKOWSKE WEBER).
Frieda is listed as a housewife in the 1920 U.S. Federal Census and together with her second husband she made her home in the New York borough of The Bronx, where they lived as boarders at 1907 Davidson Avenue.
At the beginning of the 1920s, Fred and Frieda go to Jamestown, Chautauqua County, New York. Fred got a job as an electrician and works for Roth & Zillig Inc.. The company were distributors for "Phila Diamond Grid Battery." They had the official service and offered genuine car parts for Delco, Klaxon, Remy, Atwater, Kent, North East, Gray Davis, Connecticut, Briggs-Stratton, Eisemann, Bosch und Splitdorf. They had also specialized in complete automobile electric service and starting, lighting and ignition systems. Residence of Fred and Frieda in Jamestown was at No. 14 Barrows Street.
In 1923, the couple moved to California and the Greater Los Angeles area. They had their own home in Hollywood (5532½ Harold Way (just between Hollywood Blvd. to the north and Sunset Blvd. to the south).
Fred worked as an automobile mechanic for J. E. Coberly, Inc., 1400 W. 8th Street, Los Angeles, CA (1939) and later for Warner Brothers in Burbank, CA. Frieda had a job as a clerk in a "Street Railway Office" (probably at the "Pacific Electric Railway" with headquarters in Torrance, CA).
During the next years they can also be found at the same address in Hollywood.
Fred and Frieda SOMMERS had no children. Her last residence according to her death certificate was 1745 North Gramercy Place, Hollywood. "Bethany Towers" is a multi-family home. Built in 1933, it provides continued care community and assisted living for elderly people.
At the age of 89, Frieda SOMMERS passed away on Dec.30, 1967 at the Royal Oaks Convalescent Hospital in Glendale, Los Angeles County, CA. Her remains were cremated by "Pierce Brothers Valhalla" on Jan.8, 1968 and buried in the Columbarium of the "Chapel of the Pines Crematory".
For many years there had been contacts between Frieda and her brother Otto and her sister-in-law Helene in Dresden, Germany [at that time German Democratic Republic], but after Otto's death in 1952 letters became fewer. That's why her DoD, PoD and place of burial have not been known for almost 30 years.
