Frederick Edward "Fred" SOMMERS wurde am 6. Dezember 1890 in Dallas, Texas geboren.

WITTKOWSKE. Mit seiner Frau lebt er lt. Volkszähungsliste von 1920 im New Yorker Stadtteil The Bronx (1907 Davidson Avenue).

Frederick Edward "Fred" SOMMERS was born in Dallas, Texas on December 6, 1890.

Although the names of the parents differ in the various official documents, they refer to the same person:
Andrew SOMMERS and Alice (BATTER) SOMMERS
(Certificate and Record of Marriage, Manhattan, 1919) /
John SOMMERS and Anna (ANDERSON) SOMMERS
(U.S. Social Security Act, Application for Account Number, 19139)

The family situation must have been rather difficult as he spent his boyhood and early youth at a Dallas (?) orphanage.

Around 1910, he left Texas for New York City. A great number of workers was needed there for the construction of the downtown rapid transit tunnels for the New York subway. By 1917, Fred worked as an electrician for Flinn-O'Rourke Co., Inc., 17 Battery Place.

Between 1916 and 1920, this construction company built the Old Slip-Clark Street Tunnel (opened in 1919) and the Whitehall-Montague Street Tunnel (opened in 1920) under the East River. It was involved in the construction of the Harlem River Tubes for the Manhattan-Bronx Division of the New York Subway (Lexington Avenue Tunnel, finished in 1918 for the "IRT Lexington Avenue Line" [IRT = Interborough Rapid Transit]).

On July 19, 1919, Fred SOMMERS married 41-year-old Frieda Emilie (WITTKOWSKE) WEBER in Manhattan. According to the 1920 U.S. Federal Census, the couple were boarders in the New York borough of The Bronx (1907 Davidson Avenue). Fred's new employer at that time was the Wagner Electric Co., New York.

At the beginning of the 1920s, Fred and Frieda go to Jamestown, Chautauqua County, New York. Fred got a job as an electrician and works for Roth & Zillig Inc.. The company were distributors for "Phila Diamond Grid Battery." They had the official service and offered genuine car parts for Delco, Klaxon, Remy, Atwater, Kent, North East, Gray Davis, Connecticut, Briggs-Stratton, Eisemann, Bosch und Splitdorf. They had also specialized in complete automobile electric service and starting, lighting and ignition systems. Residence of Fred and Frieda in Jamestown, No. 14 Barrows Street.

In 1923, the couple moved to California and the Greater Los Angeles area. They had their own home in Hollywood (5532½ Harold Way - between Hollywood Blvd. to the north and Sunset Blvd. to the south).

At first, Fred found a job as an automobile mechanic with J. E. Coberly, Inc. (a Lincoln car dealer), 1400 W. 8th Street, Los Angeles, CA [1939]. Later he worked at the Warner Brothers film studios in Burbank, CA [1942]). Frieda was a clerk at the "Street Railway Office" (probably at the "Pacific Electric Railway" whose headquarters had been in Torrance, CA).

For the next couple of years they can still be found at the same address in Hollywood.

Fred and Frieda SOMMERS had no children. His last residence according to his death certificate was 1745 North Gramercy Place, Hollywood. "Bethany Towers" is a multi-family home. Built in 1933, it provides continued care community and assisted living for elderly people.

At the age of 78, Fred SOMMERS passed away on Jul.15, 1969 at the Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, Los Angeles County, CA. His remains were cremated by "Pierce Brothers Valhalla" on Jul.22, 1969 and buried in the Columbarium of the "Chapel of the Pines Crematory".
