Charles Michael Schwab
Birth: Feb. 18, 1862
Death: Sep. 19, 1939

Industrialist. Born in Williamsburg, Pennsylvania, to John Anthony Schwab and his wife Pauline Farabaugh, Charles Schwab early came to the attention of industrial baron Andrew Carnegie. Schwab rose to the presidency of Carnegie Steel by 1897, and became first president of the newly-organized United States Steel in 1901. He resigned the presidency two years later to head his own company, Bethlehem Steel. Schwab's personal worth rose substantially before and during the First World War as he provided steel for construction projects and for armaments. He was destined to lose the bulk of his fortune in the Crash of 1929 and the ensuing Great Depression. He maintained a lavish residence in New York City, and another named "Immergrün" at his family's ancestral village of Loretto, atop Allegheny Mountain in Pennsylvania. It is here that his remains were interred in the family mausoleum after his death in 1939. (bio by: Albert Ledoux)
