William was a brickmaker, owned his own brickmaking and brickwork business. After the Civil War the Government contracted [ordered] him to leave Patterson, NJ and build a brick wall around the soldiers' graves in Salisbury, NC. He also did the brickwork for the Buncombe County Courthouse that was the immediate forerunner of the Courthouse in use in 1992. He also did the work for the Courthouse in Brevard serving Transylvania County, and the one in Waynesville serving Haywood County.
