Albert Nielsen was born on July 21, 1868, on the island of Aero in Denmark. He was not given a middle name when he was born. Albert was probably named after his late brother, also named Albert Nielsen (1860-1861), who died as an infant from an unknown cause. (His parents must not have been concerned about giving Albert the same name as his deceased brother; perhaps they felt they were honoring him or a previous relative!)

Albert's parents were Anders Bernhardt (or Bernhart) Nielsen (1837-1873), a farmer, and Anne Marie Hansen (1828-?). They had six children: Lars, Niels and Albert (who both died in infancy), Anne, Niels (yes, a second Niels), and finally, Albert, who was their last child.

Albert immigrated to America on April 3, 1889, with an occupation listed as "servant." Albert married Anne Marie Groth on the island of Aero, Denmark, on March 22, 1896.

Although he came to America in 1889 as a servant, we do not know what he actually did for a living until 1898. Starting in 1898, he worked as a conductor, motorman and driver on various San Francisco railways (streetcars). From 1898 to 1900, according to several San Francisco directories and the 1900 Federal Census, Albert was a conductor on the Market Street Railway and lived on Mississippi Street. By 1904, he was a motorman on the United Railways and lived on Vermont Street.

By 1908, Albert was no longer working for the railways. We believe that he started working in the liquor business and moved the family to Treat Avenue. In 1910, Albert's wife, Anne Marie (Groth) Nielsen, died during a miscarriage.

Within nine months of Anne's passing, Albert surprised the family by marrying Christine Christensen (1875-1953) in 1911. (Christine was the sister of one of his neighbors, Mette Marie (Christensen) Bakke.) At the time, Albert was the father of seven children, three of whom were six years old or younger. Perhaps he felt they needed to have a mother right away.

After the marriage, Albert adopted Christine's son, Carl, from her first marriage, and even gave Carl the Nielsen surname. Carl would have been about six years old at the time.

In the 1910 Federal Census, Albert's occupation was listed as "wine and liquor salesman," although directories listed him as a "driver." He probably continued as a salesman/driver until about 1920. In 1920, after the start of Prohibition, he was a "lodging house proprietor," and in 1930, a "salesman in a coffeehouse." Albert and Christine would operate their boarding house on Treat Avenue in San Francisco.

Albert was very active in fraternal organizations. In addition to the Danish Brotherhood, Dania, Norden, and the Danish Masonic Club, Albert was also a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), and the Free and Accepted Masons. He passed away in 1943 and was cremated at the Cypress Lawn Cemetery in Colma, California, but interred at the Mount Tamalpais Cemetery, San Rafael, Marin County, California.
