Senator, 1897-8, from the Fifth District, composed of the counties of Lenawee and Monroe. Was born in England, Oct. 20, 1843, and came to America with his parents in May, 1851, locating at Genesee, N. Y., for two years, where he acquired his early education in the public schools, supplemented by a high school course; then coming to Michigan, locating on a farm in Hudson Township, Lenawee County, where he again attended the public school winters and worked on the farm summers. At the outbreak of the Civil Was he enlisted in Co. B, 2d Mich. Infantry, but not being of age his father objected and he was taken out, but having an earnest determination to take part in the defense of his county, he again enlisted in Co. F, 4th Mich. Infantry, and was again objeted to by his father, and again taken out. On Aug. 24, 1861, he again enlisted in Co. F, 11th Mich. Infantry, where he served over three years with General George H. Thomas; was wounded twice. Returning, he worked at farming and blacksmithing until 1876, when he was elected Collector and Marshal of the village of Morenci; was appointed Deputy Sheriff, in which position he served for eight years; was Deputy Oil Inspector but resigned to take the position of Superintendent of the Michigan Stone & Supply Company quarry, located at Maybee, Monroe County. He was twice commander of the G. A. R. post at Adrian, Mich., and senior vice commander of the state department one year; a member of the F. & A. M. and of the K. of P., and past captain of U. R. K. of P. In politics a Republican.
