Governor of New Mexico. After receiving an education at the University of New Mexico and Yale Law School, he joined the Army Air Corps as a private in 1942. He was discharged at the end of World War II in 1945 as a lieutenant colonel. He bacame a partner in a law firm in Albuquerque and was elected to the New Mexico legislature in 1947 and 1949. He was elected governor of New Mexico as a Democrat on November 2, 1954. During his administration, he served as chairman of the Interstate Oil Compact Commission bewteen 1955 and 1956. The state's economy began to shift from agriculture and ranching to manufacturing during his term. He lost his re-election bid in 1956 and returned to Albuquerque to practice law specializing in oil and gas leases. (bio by: Thomas Fisher)
