Deceased Name: VANCE, VIRGIL J. La Jolla lost a long-time booster and friend when Virgil J. Vance died on January 30 at the age of 88.

Virgil was born in 1915 in Bisbie, Arizona and until relocating in La Jolla in 1969, was involved in the ranching and used car business in Arizona.

In 1977, Virgil started the La Jolla Cab Company and Mercedes Transportation. He also purchased the Mira Montes Apartment Hotel on Prospect Street and leased it to longtime friend and current operator, Lincoln Foster. Virgil loved people and always had a good word for friend or stranger. He could be seen for many years peddling his bicycle around La Jolla, with his characteristic bowlegs proving the power and his signature bolo tie and alligator shoes providing the style.

Virgil leaves his beloved companion of 26 years, Evelyn Smith of La Jolla, and within his immediate family, leaves five children including Deidre Scheckel of Scottsdale, Arizona, Linda Paglione of Pueble, Colorado, Vincent Vance of San Diego, Jay Vance of Tucson, Arizona, and James Vance of Cedar Park, Texas.

He is also survived by numerous grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Candice. El Camino Mortuary is handling the arrangements. No services will be held. Please sign the guest book at obituaries.uniontrib.com
