Francis M. Phillips, aged 80, one of the oldest residents of Wayne Township, died at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 17, 1934, in his home on Stewart Run, near Oak Forest, following an illness due to ailments incident to his advanced years.

A son of Thomas and Margaret Whitlatch Phillips, he was born February 24, 1854, in Perry Township, but spent most of his life in Wayne Township, where he was following farming and stock raising. Mr. Phillips was a member of the Valley Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church.

He was twice married. His first wife was Martha Brock, and to this union three children were born. They are John L. Phillips, of Mt. Morris; T. W. Phillips, of Spraggs, and Mrs. Haddie Dulaney, of Kirby. His second wife was Sarah Ann Rice, whom her married July 9, 1896, survives with the following children: James M. Phillips, Waynesburg, R. D. 7; Mrs. Rosa Baysinger, Amity, R. D.; Charles Phillips, Waynesburg, R. D. 4; Mrs. Margaret E. Ankrom and Mrs. Charlotte Ankrom, Waynesburg, R. D. 2.

He also leaves his step-mother, Mrs. Nancy Phillips, of Spraggs; a step-daughter, Mrs. William (Minnie) Shultz, of Waynesburg, and the following half brothers and half sisters: Jacob E. Phillips and James "Harvey" Phillips, of Spraggs; Spencer "Ross" Phillips, Thomas Charles Phillips and Jobe Phillips, of Waynesburg; Abraham Ellsworth "Elzie" Phillips, of Spraggs, and Mrs. Sarah Louisa (Washington Irving) Wright, of Reedy, W. Va. Deceased is a sister, Armeda Phillips Wright. There are 30 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
