Nicholas S. Ballas Sr., age 84, on Friday, May 17, 2002, at home. He was born in Duquesne on Feb. 2, 1918, son of the late Miklos (Mike) and Esther Katko Ballas (Balasz). Survived by his wife, Antoinette (Jean) Juliana Ballas; and two sons, Nicholas S. Ballas Jr. and DeWayne R. Ballas, both of West Mifflin. Brother of Alice Wargo of Coulter, and Marian Nagy and Olga Darnay, both of West Mifflin. Also survived by four grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was a retired employee of the General Services Department of U.S. Steel, Duquesne Works and the Greater Pittsburgh Auto Auction in West Mifflin. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran serving in the 267th QM.Co. He was a member of the Hungarian Reformed Church of Duquesne, West Mifflin Auxiliary Police for 40 years and a band leader of the Jimmy Lee Orchestra. Friends received in the WILLIAM S. SKOVRANKO MEMORIAL HOME, Richford and Commonwealth Avenues in Duquesne, on Sunday from 1 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be conducted Monday at 12 noon in the memorial home chapel by the Rev. Dr. Daniel Borsay. Private burial will follow in Jefferson Memorial Park, Pleasant Hills. Family requests memorials to the Hungarian Reformed Church, 1411 Kennedy Ave., Duquesne, or the American Heart Association.
