He was born November 1, 1932 in Manistique the son of Peter and Ann (Lasich) Burnis and graduated from the Manistique High School in the Class of 1951.
He served in the U.S. Navy in the Atlantic aboard the USS Cony during the Korean Conflict.
On November 5, 1955 he married Harriet A. Wilson in Manistique. She preceded him in death on March 30, 2004.
Dick was employed as a pipeline maintenance supervisor with Enbridge Energy, formerly known as Lakehead Pipeline. He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church of Manistique. He was a member of the Manistique Elks Lodge #632 and was honored as Elk of the Year in 2004-2005.
Dick enjoyed doing for others and spending quality time with his family and friends. He particularly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. His vital spirit has left a legacy of strength, courage, love and deep joy and happiness. His generosity and love for life will be fondly remembered by those whose lives he has touched.
He is survived by his sons: Rick (Tricia) Burnis of Marinette, WI, Michael (Kim) Burnis of Manistique and Thomas Burnis of Dodge City, KS; daughters: Lori (Ted) Wolf of Iron Mountain, MI, Linda (Nathan Minor) Burnis of Cooks and Tara (Lance) Ladouceur of Auburndale, FL; grandchildren: Stephen, Christopher and Nicholas Burnis; Ashley and Logan Burnis; Alex Burnis and Spencer and Sydney Casey; sister, Patricia Demers of Manistique and very special friend and companion, Carol LaRose of Manistique. In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by his grandson, Matthew Villemure and brothers, Robert Burnis and Roland Burnis.
Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique, with a veterans' memorial service at 6:00 P.M. Memorial services will follow at 7:00 P.M. with Celebrant Carole Copper officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery at Manistique.
Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation or the Disabled Veterans.
