OBITUARY: CLAY B. WELLS, 56, IS TAKEN BY DEATH

Clay Barrett Wells, aged fifty six, clerk of Wood County Circuit Court for the past fourteen years, died at 5 o'clock last evening in St. Joseph's Hospital following a paralytic stroke Monday from which he never regained consciuosness.

At the opening term of court last October Mr. Wells was taken suddenly ill and he was confined to his home for several weeks. He later returned to the court house to resume his duties but he was forced to abanden his work when his strength failed him. Mr. Wells had been able to be out and was at the city building Monday when he suffered a recurring stroke.

Connected with the office of clerk of Wood county circuit court for the past twenty-nine years Mr. Wells was one of the best known court officials in this part of the state. He had been a deputy clerk in the office for fifteen years untill 1915 when he was elected to susceed Circuit Clerk Walter E. Stout, present Parkersburg mayor, and at the time of his death was in his second year of his third six-year term.

Born in Elizabeth, Wirt County, August 11, 1872, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Wells, he attended schools in that district and in young manhood was a railway mail clerk on the Baltimore & Ohio river division and on the Norfolk & Western railroads. Several years later he was a stenographer for Merrick and Smith, Parkersburg law firm, untill his appointment as deputy circuit clerk under Clerk Captain O. M. Clemens in 1902. He also served as deputy under Circuit Clerks Doremas Paden, John Hogan Jr. James A. Bryden and Walter E. Stout. After his election in 1915 as chief circuit clerk, his popularity and prominence in county Republican ranks were attested to by his reelections. At the last election he carried a large Republican majority.

Mr. Wells had been a Parkersburg resident ever since his early connections with the Merrick and Smith law firm and in recent years had resided with his family at 1225 Twentieth street. He was a veteran of the Spanish-American War, serving as regimental clerk under Colonel Spilman. In 1903, after his return to Parkersburg, he was married to Miss Agnes Miller of Syracuse, Ohio, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David C. Miller.

A thirty-second degree Mason, Mr. Wells belonged to the Blue Lodge, Purnell lodge and Shriners. He was a member of the Spanish-American War veterans encampment of this city and was affileated with local lodge No. 198, B. P. O. E. Mr. Wells belonged to the First Methodist Episcopal church congregation.

Exceptionally well known in the city, Mr. Wells was popular for his courteousness, efficiency and able manner in which he conducted his office, and he had many intimate friends among members of the legal profession with whom he came onto contact daily.

He leaves his widow, Mrs. Agness Wells, his mother, Mrs. Lucie King Wells of this city: two sisters, Mrs. William Beard, of Parkersburg and Mrs. Ornia Hart of Chicago: one son, Jack Wells, and one daughter, Mrs. Chester Stephen, both of this city.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 3 P. M. from the residence on Twentieth street, with the Rev. C. Fred Anderson of the First M. E. church officiating. Interment will be made in Mount Olivet cemetery.
