Lewis Roberson was born in Camden County, Georgia, one of the five children of Jane and Yardley Lewis Roberson. He was their only son but there were two older sisters and two younger. Margaret was the oldest, five years older than Lewis. Elizabeth was two years older than he and Sarah was three years younger. Lewis grew up near Jeffersonton, Baileys District of Camden County in the settlement near the Great Satilla River. His father was a wealthy planter who owned 28 slaves in 1830. Lewis lost his father before he was eight years old. His mother died when he was 10. After she died, Lewis and two of his sisters lived with their older sister Margaret, who had married William D. Cole. Margaret and William had two young daughters, Christianna and Emeline. Margaret died when Lewis was 18 but he remained with his brother-in-law, William and William's two daughters. William was a wealthy planter who reported owning land in 1860 valued at $5000 and personal property worth $26,975. Lewis owned no land but had property worth $10,243. The personal property values were most likely the value of their slaves as Lewis owned 11 and William owned 48. It doesn't seem that Lewis married as he died a year after the 1860 census where he was recorded as a single "gentleman."
