Robert Cecil Faulk

June 24, 1919 to June 2, 2010

Bob Faulk of La Mesa, CA passed away on Wednesday, June 2, 2010, just shy of his 91st birthday. Bob was born in Carrollton, Missouri on June 24, 1919. He lived in the area until 1940, when he packed up his Plymouth Coupe and headed for San Diego and the promise of work at Consolidated Aircraft. In 1944, Bob was drafted and served in the Navy. Not too long after his discharge, he became the owner/ operator of the historic Pick-wick Hotel Barber Shop. After he sold the shop in 1977, he had a successful third career in real estate. Bob is survived by his four sons, Larry, of Winter Park Florida, Tom, of La Jolla, California, Dan, of Aracata, CA, and Scott of Sacramento, CA. He will be missed by his nine grandchildren and three great-grand-children. He was preceded in death by the boys' mother, Gloria Mortimer Faulk in 1979. In 1981, he remarried to Marian Evans of Ypsilanti, Michigan, a retired San Diego City Schools teacher of 37 years. Bob was a social, life-loving man who had countless affiliations in San Diego. Many will feel his absence, including his friends at First Presbyterian Church, which he joined in 1954 and served as both deacon and elder. He was also a member of the Heartland Group, the Clipper Club and the Musical Merit Foundation of Greater San Diego. In addition to his roles as husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Bob was a patriot, a man of great faith, and a skilled wood worker with an ear for music. He was a self-taught pianist who loved the symphony and sat on the board of The Musical Merit Foundation. A visit with Bob always included laughter, a review of the latest Lamb's Players production, and an insistence upon sharing in his stash of See's chocolate. Up until the last five years, Bob loved traveling with Marian. They enjoyed multiple trips to different regions in Europe, Russia, and China, including several cruises with friends. When home, he could be found working away in his woodshop or wheeling and dealing at garage sales, where he would find odds and ends to add to his various collections. Bob loved taking his daily walks at Parkway Plaza, probably more for the people he met than the exercise he got. Bob touched so many lives and all who knew him will miss him greatly. As per Bob's wishes, any gifts should be given to First Presbyterian Church, 320 Date Street, San Diego, CA 92101, or The Musical Merit Foundation, 3760 Florida Street #308, San Diego, CA 92104.(Published in The (California) San Diego Union- Tribune on June 20, 2010, page G6)
