A true Southern lady of rare grace, strength, and wit, she was a 1938 graduate of Winthrop College, and taught in the schools of Myrtle Beach and at Gastonia High School. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Gastonia; a circle leader; president of the American Legion Auxiliary; Regent of William Gaston Chapter, D.A.R.; president of the Gastonia Debutante Club; volunteer at Gaston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and at Crisis Assistance Ministry.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Basil L. Whitener; and sister, Jane Morgan Avinger of Orangeburg, S.C.
Survivors include children and spouses: John Morgan Whitener and wife Susan, Lee McDonnell and husband James, Basil Whitener, Jr. and wife Erin, and Barrett S. Whitener; six grandchildren: Peyton Nunez, Steven Whitener, Andrew Cloninger, Adam Cloninger, Jared Knight, and Thomas Whitener; and two great-grandchildren, Spencer and Lucy Nunez.
A private graveside service will be held for the family at Gaston Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 3:00pm to 4:30pm, Saturday, June 5, 2010 in the Assembly Room of Covenant Village.
