Belgium Queen. Born in 1876, a Duchess in Bavaria, niece of Empress Elisabeth of Austria from paternal ancestry, she was the wife of King Albert I of Belgium. Known for having patronized several humanitarian foundations and civil, and for her commitment towards the problems of Public Health. In 1934, after the death of her husband, she assumed the title of Her Majesty Elisabeth, Queen Mother of Belgium. She was an artist, a musician and a patron of the arts and sciences, and continued throughout her life to correspond and help scientists, musicians and artists, including Albert Schweitzer and Albert Einstein. She was awarded the title "Righteous Among the Nations" by Israel for using her influence as queen to rescue hundreds of Jewish children from the Nazis during the occupation of Belgium from 1940 to 1944. Queen Elisabeth of Belgium died November 23, 1965 in Brussels.
