A.P. SCHMIDT, HERE 80 YEARS, IS DEAD

FORMER BUSINESS MAN BELIEVED OLDEST RESIDENT

AUGUST P. SCHMIDT, 85, a resident of Grand Rapids for more than 80 years, died at his residence, 13 National ave., SW., Tuesday night after an illness of three weeks.

He was born in Karlsruhe, Germany, Aug. 19, 1852, and came to Grand Rapids, two years later with his parents. It is believed he was the oldest continuous resident of the city.

Schmidt and a brother, CHARLES, engaged in the monument business of West Bridge st. under the firm CHARLES SCHMIDT AND BROS., when both were young men. Later the firm moved to Straight and Fulton st. where the business was continued until 1912. He also was a partner with his brothers, CHARLES, JOHN, MATHEW and ANTHONY F. SCHMIDT in a general retail merchandise, grocery and meat business until the firm was dissolved. He then engaged in the meat business until his retirement in 1925.

Surviving are his widow, MRS. ANNA SCHMIDT; his son, RUDOLPH J. SCHMIDT; four daughters, MRS. GEORGE C. BROWN, MRS. JOSEPH TOBIN, MRS. EDWARD J. ESCH, MRS. ALFRED F. WINTERHALTER; 38 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a brother, ANTHONY F. SCHMIDT.

He was a member of the St. Joseph and Holy Name societies.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 9 o'clock in St. Mary's church. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary cemetery. The body reposes at the residence.

ST. MARY'S CHURCH, WEST SIDE.

A handsome baptismal font is now being made for this church by the SCHMIDT BROS., marble cutters, 93 Canal street. It will be cut out of Euclid freestone. The design is chaste and elegant. The h[e]ight of the front will be three feet two inches, diameter two feet and one inch. The pedestal will be Gothic, carved and surrounded by eight octagonal columns, interspersed with richly carved panels.
